Electric wireline is a crucial technology used in the oil and gas industry for various downhole operations. It is a method of conveying tools, sensors, and equipment into a wellbore by means of an electric cable. This versatile and efficient technique has revolutionized the way well interventions and data acquisition are conducted in the exploration and production of hydrocarbon reserves. The advent of electric wireline technology provided significant advantages over its predecessor, by utilizing an electric cable, wireline services can transmit data, perform measurements, and operate various downhole tools using electrical power from the surface. This enables real-time monitoring, control, and analysis of downhole conditions, resulting in enhanced efficiency, accuracy, and safety.
The electric wireline system consists of several components that work in tandem to accomplish a range of tasks. At the heart of this system is the wireline cable, which can either be a mono-cable or a multi-conductor cable capable of transmitting power and data signals between the surface equipment and downhole tools. The cable is spooled onto a winch drum, which can be controlled to lower or raise the wireline tools into the wellbore.
Downhole tools attached to the electric wireline cable serve diverse purposes. Logging tools, for instance, are used to measure formation properties, such as resistivity, porosity, and fluid saturation, providing valuable information about the subsurface as well as well integrity. Perforating tools help create channels through the casing and cement behind the casing to enable fluid flow from the reservoir into the wellbore. Moreover, intervention tools, such as plugs, valves, and packers, are deployed for well maintenance, stimulation, or completion operations.
